Is it rude, this late in February, to ask how your New Year’s Resolutions are going? If it is, know that mine are on crutches. Not dead, but not exactly winning, either.
I’m a fan of resolutions though. I like the reflective mood and midnight journaling that arise for me in the days approaching the year’s end. I’m the guy you see at the gym or yoga studio in January, tomato-faced and puffing after months of sloth.
I have friends who point out that New Year’s is arbitrary. Just another day. But I’m sort of like, “well that’s just your opinion, man”. Then I go on pretending to enjoy my breakfast spinach salad (one of the resolutions that’s stuck, so far). And I figure that if some arbitrary day gets me to examine what’s going right and wrong in my life, then great. Not arbitrary for me.
But anyway this year was a little different. As we all collectively said good-bye to 2018, and hello to 2019–at that very minute, in fact—H & K were sealing their vows with a kiss and a toast as their friends and family toasted back and cheered. Let me lay this glorious scene:
The Bedford Basin Farmer’s Market: the upstairs level is a classy space equipped with a bar, intimate lighting, large windows and plenty of dance space. On New Year’s eve, the tables there were spread with lots of good food. H had her favourite DJ spinning music. Warm speeches began the evening, following dances and then partying. Like, high energy partying. Later on, as the party was still on its upswing, the mood shifted; the music hushed and people holding candles formed an isle at the bottom of which stood K, calm and expectant. Moments later, H—smiling, elegant, sparkling—came down to meet him. It’s amazing how quickly a sacred space can suddenly emerge from what was wild dance-party chaos only minutes ago. As 2018 ran out its final minutes on the clock, so too did H & K wrap up their vows, kissed, and then the celebration continued.
Their New’s Resolutions were also their wedding vows. How about that?
