Most of my best skills–the ones that inflate my ego–are actually fairly pedestrian. I can explain things well; I can focus really, really hard; I can make a mean blue-cheeese burger. Rae’s best talents, on the other hand, are something else. Some of her skills are so astonishing that they challenge my world-view. One of the things she does well, when she’s in the right mood, is manifest things. I mean that exactly the way it sounds. She may as well have a magic wand. I can back this claim up with a staggering number of examples. This blog is one of them.
Back in the wretched winter of 2015, Rae and I were chatting about goals. When she said she wanted a destination wedding for this year, I sort of snickered. Not only did I strongly doubt we’d book one–I wasn’t even sure I’d know what to do if we did. Rae was certain, which I thought was cute.
Enter Sarah and Andrew.
Sarah had seen us photograph one of her friends’ weddings, and she shot us an email. We couldn’t have been more thrilled.
Sarah is a social worker and Andrew is a nurse. Nova Scotia is better for having them. Both care for people professionally, but caring runs deeper in them. It’s in their characters. You can see it in their faces and the way they hold themselves. It constitutes enough of their personality that planning a wedding became……..difficult. It’s hard to plan a wedding for yourselves, when everyone’s wants and needs outrank your own. The way I understand it, Sarah and Andrew eloped to NYC to celebrate their relationship their own way and planned on sharing their marriage with their families during a reception later on in the year.
When you’re looking through these photos below, I want you to notice something: Andrew and Sarah prepared for the wedding separately and had their first look at each other right before heading to City Hall. Look at the photos of Andrew before he sees his bride, and compare them to the ones after he sees his bride. Can you see a pattern? That’s what love does to you…..(he said that as he waited to see Sarah, he was as nerve-racked as he was in the hours before his first date with her). Also notice that Sarah has a smile that seems to light up an entire city block in NYC. You’d never know that she was battling on-going health issues, she does it was such grace and unflinching positivity. It’s actually her birthday today (August 16). Give her a shout out ;-D
