Some Drag Queen Love
My love for drag queens dates back to 1998 when I was a 20-year old University of Louisville student looking for a fun night on the town and ended up at Play Louisville Dance Club to dance the study blues away. There just happened to be a drag show that evening. OMG… the costumes, drama, laughs and performances, I was beside myself in glee. I know I talked about it for weeks afterward. However, being from a small town it would be several years before I had my next taste of drag. My next live Drag Show was in San Francisco at the fabulous Asia SF. TBH… these ladies made me feel less of a woman lol – they were so freakin’ gorgeous and on top of that… crazy talented performers. I highly recommend a dinner date out if you happen to be in the San Fran area. Then low and behold… RUPAUL’s DRAG RACE. My fondness grew even more and I didn’t even have to leave the house – I have religiously watched almost every season sans 1 (when I first moved to Canada I missed the Sharon Needles season because I couldn’t find a way to watch it). I am not sure what it is that I love so much about Drag Queens – Who am I kidding – there is SO MUCH to love about Drag Queens… their artistry, humor, and confidence. I greatly admire their tenacity for their artform.
Here are a link to a few of my favorites!
Violet Chachki – one of my biggest regrets – not seeing her perform while I was in Atlanta. Omg and that corseted waist – get out of town!
Kim Chi – the art of it all and one of my favorite Korean dishes (hehe) + her story about her mom really resonates with me.
Gosh looking at all this fabulousness makes me want to become a professional Drag Queen Photog.
Now about Contessa
Contessa (Scott Bosse) is a fabulous example of this Drag Queen fierceness mixed with inspiring determination, and wholehearted passion. Scott contacted us a few months ago to ask us to take part in his charity event, Cosmic Drag Queen Bingo (I’ve been dying to go to this for over a year now!). We were more than excited to take part by providing a photobooth and covering some of the event. Boy what an event!! There were some fabulous performances from the queen herself and the Unleashed Dancers. Bingo players had the opportunity to win lots of great prizes and were entertained by two other amazing Drag Queens – Cynthia Stilts – a beauty with legs for days (She stands 7’1″ in her heels – WHOA!) and the funny and fabulous Kristi Davidson – this queen has some moves! It truly was an amazing night (It might have actually converted Topher to a fan – not as big as me of course!). Cosmic Drag Queen Bingo has done a lot over the past five years (8 biannual events) for various charities but this year she has knocked it out of the park for Feed Nova Scotia, both at this event and the Spring event back in April. We’ve made a sweet little infograph (check it out below) giving you some fun facts about Contessa and the crazy awesome work she is doing with Cosmic Drag Queen Bingo. I am seriously excited for the next one and I highly encourage you all to make a night of it! Check out all the fun and goodwill below!
