So Anj is my Kevin Bacon in Halifax (or she was when she lived here… sadly she is back in Saskatchewan now). Literally, I thought everyone knew Anj personally or by proxy. Her infectious energy and outgoing nature helped her cultivate a massive local social network. When I first moved to Halifax, I was lucky enough to meet her through a Couchsurfing meetup. I credit her for introducing me to the beauty of Halifax and some of the most important people I have in my life now, one being the love of my life, Topher. Toph & Anj both taught English in Korea together and by happenstance, Topher came to crash at Anj’s for a month to level up his teaching skills before heading back to Korea. That was just a month after I moved to Halifax… a move I wanted in order to gain my independence, go back to school and see what it was like to be single. I think it’s obvious that my single life didn’t last long and Topher never made it back to Korea.
Anj also introduced me to Amy, one of my favorites. Amy really gets my introverted & empathic ways and shares the same love of folk music and quirky fashion. I’ve always had quite extroverted friends who have much different tastes than me but Amy is my sister from another mother. Seriously, it’s crazy how many things we have in common. Sometimes, I hear her talk and I am like… OMG get out of my head! Every time we hang out, we find something new we have in common that now it’s not even a surprise anymore. Now, we look at each other, nod and exclaim, “Well, of course.”
Then there is Eric & Jane… I met these two within the first month of moving to Halifax. Anj let me tag along with her to a house party at Eric & Jane’s a couple of times. They were both wholeheartedly welcoming and generous the few times I hang out with them socially. As I got deeper into my studies and into my new relationship with Topher, I drifted away from the social scene in Halifax and lost contact with these two. It would be several months later in the very early stages of Topher & Rae Studios that Jane reached out to us to photograph their baby girl, Ivy. So why are they so important to me? Well, it’s simple… they have been with us since the beginning of Topher & Rae Studios. As they have grown as a family, we have had the opportunity to grow as photographers with them. Our body of work with them is an important part of our own story. Also, they really are the epitome of what we want to provide to our clients, a meaningful visual life story. Gaining the trust of a family to let us into the intimate moments of their life repeatedly from weddings to births is what it’s all about for us. We understand that the moments we capture will be looked back upon for years to come as a kindling of memories, sparking reminiscing of a life well lived. How very magical it is for us to capture those moments for you. Here’s a playful session we did with Eric, Jane, Ivy and their newest little one, Myles.
