There’s a house in the remote forests of Ontario in which a man sits still and silent. I can see he’s got 14 minutes left of his meditation because he’s using ‘Insight Timer’, an app that connects yogis and meditators to each other. This guy is my dad, and it’s cool that this app exists because I can also read his daily posts of gratitude (a practice he’s taken up), and his interactions with others. It’s a beautiful thing.
I’d never heard the term “gratitude practice” before I met Rae, who also trains herself this way quite frequently. I’ve dabbled a bit with ‘deliberate gratitude’ too. It’s the sort of practice I start off feeling…weird. “I’m thankful for the couch I’m sitting on”, I write, feeling dishonest and idiotic. After days (or weeks) of practice, I start noticing different things in my life. I start noticing all the catastrophes that could happen but don’t, as well as the countless blessings around me that I blindly take for granted. Unsurprisingly, looking at the world through the lens of gratitude results in more happiness.
It’s sort of like the default mode for some brains is “ungrateful jackass”, and there’s no user’s manual for settings adjustments….so if you’re like me, you have to try things out.
This is all a very long introduction to how I feel for having shot this wedding. For a variety of reasons, I’m specifically grateful to have photographed this one. For one, it was one of those blessing of weather and location: a warm, sunny, seaside celebration, with blue skies and large billows of fluffy clouds. I’m also thankful for A & M (the newly weds), who were clearly in love, warm-hearted, modest, and surrounded by good people. It was an intimate wedding, a small gathering of people with big hearts. I’m also grateful that I have the sort of job that constantly exposes me to the best in humanity.
Here’s a few favourite moments from their day.
