I first came across Bowtique Hair & Makeup when I was reviewing 2014’s Canadian Wedding Industry Award winners from Atlantic Canadian last fall. The talented Lauren Arbuckle (also The 2014 Coast’s Winner) was a winner last year so I started following Bowtique on Social Media and fell in love with their Instagram feed of often colorful, feminine and full of life hair transformations. It was on Instagram that I found out that Bowtique was having an open house in their new space on Barrington so Topher and I stopped in after a downtown stroll to check it out. We were greeted by friendly faces and a beautiful space with a fun and urban vibe. We were lucky to be introduced to the owner, Meg Ryan and luckily she agreed to take part in our Vendor Spotlight. Bowtique has been in Halifax for almost 4 years with a sister location in Dartmouth, Bowtique, the Hills.
Meg’s entrepreneur spirit runs in the family as both her parents and her sister (at Serpentine Studios) are business owners. Meg’s love of hair started at a young age and translates into her enthusiasm of wedding day updos. She loves the sculptural and artistic aspects of wedding day hair. She considers her job fun, not work, and sees her staff as a group of talented girls with fun personalities who love what they do. Meg believes that Bowtique’s bride could be anyone; as their experience has been across the board from big weddings to intimate second marriages.
Bowtique’s new downtown space has given them the square-footage to house a Wedding Section in the salon, giving brides an ideal spot to bring in their wedding party for pampering with some privacy. You can even keep bridesmaids from getting “hangry” by having some grub delivered by the nearby Foggy Google. However, brides aren’t limited to getting prepped in the salon. Both Meg & Lauren are mobile and are even available for destination weddings! They just ask to have travel costs covered and a minimum number of people taking part in their services. Send them an email to ask for further details.
MEG’S WEDDING DAY ADVICE
MAKEUP & HAIR
- Book far in advance (12 months)
- Do a trial run with your stylist and artist, so you can discuss any changes that need to happen before the wedding day.
- Drink lots of water the day before so your skin is fresh and hydrated.
- Purchase the lipstick you will be wearing so you can reapply throughout the day
- Wash hair the day before
- Do not flat iron your hair before your visit – curl will not take.
- Appoint a bridesmaid to be on hair & makeup watch
- Don’t forget why you are there.
- Don’t try to please everyone. Focus on yourself + your partner – remember your vision.
- Have a backup plan for rain.
